Costa Almeria is located in Almeria province in the Andalucia region of South East of Spain. Costa Calida in the Murcia region neigbours Costa Almeria to the north and to the south is Costa Tropical. In Eastern Almeria there is the Cabo de Gata – Nijar Natural Park. Western Almeria is where mainly developed package holiday resorts are. On the northern coast there is a naturalist beach. Many of the regions tourists have bought their own Costa Almeria Villas or Costa Almeria Apartments.
The beaches have white fine sand also secluded coves with cliffs. It also contains fishing harbours and marinas, salt lagoons and nature reserves. Vera has a water park with kamikaze, body ski, twisting slides, river adventure, black hole, large pool and lake and special children’s pool and slides. A lot of produce is grown here such as the like of Oranges and Grapes all covered with plastic. These are exported to most of Europe.
Its eponymous mountain range is Spain’s largest volcanic rock formation. It forms 100m jaggered cliffs to the sea. With it’s many rock islands and coral reefs teeming with life. They are many habitats within the area. Ranging from sand dunes, beaches, saltpans, salt marshes and arid inland steppe with dry riverbeds. There are also lava flows, volcanic domes and calderas, fossilized beaches and reefs. The park’s symbol is the dwarf fan palm, which grows here. There are also species only found in the park, some of which flower all year round. In the waters of the park you will find beds of Posidonia Oceanica, 260 species of seaweed with its crustaceans, molluscs and fish.
The park has plenty of bird life, which includes many migrating birds plus Flamingos, ducks, herons and storks and ducks. There is a wide variety of reptiles, Italian wall lizards, Ocellated lizards, grass snakes and Latasters viper.
The Alcazaba, which is the 2nd largest fort built by Muslims in Spain, could hold an army of more than 20 000 men. It was built as a defence to the city and gave the city its name. Al-mariy-yat Alcazaba which means the watchtower. Within the triple wall thickness are Mosques and Palaces. Connected to the Alcazaba is the Muralla de Jairan built in 11th century descends the valley of the north side and climbs the Cerro de san Cristobal.
The Tabernas desert is located in province of Almeria about 30km north of Almeria City, a protected wilderness about 280 square km. It is situated between Sierra de los Filabres and Sierra de Alhamilla isolating from humid winds from the Mediterranean sea. Its gets about 24 cm of rain a year and high temperatures all year round averaging 18c. The desert conditions are enforced by the Foehn effect.
In the village of Tabernas within this desert region, which resembles North America’s wild west, held host to many film stars such as Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Claudia Cardinale and Charles Bronson. Parts of films such as The Good, Bad and the Ugly, A fistful of dollars and The Magnificent Seven where shot here. Due to its lunar landscape resemblance, parts of the 2001 Space Odyssy movie were shot here. Other films include Lawrence of Arabia, Conan the barbarian and Indian Jones – The last Crusade. There are 3 villages of Mini Hollywood, Texas Hollywood and Western Leone, which let you take part in daily shows with professional filmmakers and actors.
